Kickstarter
Congratulations to Perry and the team over at Kickstarter, which soft launched earlier this week. Kickstarter is a new funding platform for creative projects that uses crowd-funding to pull together passionate backers for exciting new projects.
Crowd-funding is something I spent quite a bit of time thinking about with Felix 3 years ago (it ended up being my dissertation for his class), and there are now a couple of really successful implementations of the idea, most notably Kiva.
But Kickstarter is a little different - project creators can offer incentives and rewards for contributions, but there is no ownership stake for sale, and the money is a donation not a loan. This is the perfect site for people who want to play their part in getting exciting creative projects off the ground. The site has already attracted lots of interesting projects, including custom iphone apps, photographic expeditions and exclusive t-shirts.
I was super-excited to meet Perry through Sunny last year - his deep knowledge of crowd-funding and his engagement with the creative community make him the perfect person to be pursuing this vision.
I am really excited to follow how things progress. I recommend you all get over to the site and create your own project.
