Real design

Shan pointed me towards a video earlier today about the redesign of The Australian newspaper by NewsCorp’s Al Trivino. I have been lucky enough to see some of his work before and have been blown away by the depth and beauty that he creates.
The video is 7mins long and worth every second. Some designers just think differently. Take the starting point that Al came from - not the design of the existing newspaper, or some semblance of current design principles - instead he began by building a color palette influenced by the work of 4 great Australian artists, and allowed that to set the context in which to construct the new design. That is design in its best form.
Unsurprisingly, the results are gorgeous. The small touches, which Al takes time to highlight during the video, bring a clarity to the way in which images and text tell a story. Even the white space surrounding the story has a role to play in Al’s vision for the paper.
Pure design is about achieving something incredible, that perfectly addresses the objectives of the assignment, without being constrained by the existing state or generic themes. I believe that very few people are capable of delivering it.
