Surfing in Portugal

I want to post now and again about some places that I have been that I think are worth sharing. Sometimes you just stay in a place, eat a meal or have an experience that just warrants telling others people about.

Herdade de Matinha is the best place I know for kicking back in total seclusion. On the mostly undiscovered mid-coast of Portugal, you need a 4x4 just to make it along the track that leads to this small hotel with just 10 rooms. The owner was a chef in Lisbon before deciding to slow life down and move to the countryside. He lives with his wife in the house next door, and he prepares all the meals, which are eaten family style. No menus, no choice, just whatever is fresh at the market that day, and ripe from the garden - the food is incredible.

Matinha sits a short drive from one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen, at Porto Covo. The beach is often deserted, and the surfing is as good as you will find in Europe.

If you are looking for a short break away from everything, book a stay. Its pretty near perfect.
