Essentials - New York

Lots of people ask me when the head to a place I have lived for activity suggestions. I used to prepare these long emails with lots of suggestions that was more itinerary than it was ideas.

Instead, I just cut to my 3 favorite things to do in that town. I figure that there is a much better chance they might actually do them, and that they will still have time to do all the other things they might have planned out themselves.

I’ll try and get a few cities ticked off over the coming weeks, but what better place to start than New York City, the greatest of them all:

1)    PS1. Best art experience in New York. The collection is great, its not too big (you can get around it in an hour), it has a great cafe and turns into a club every Sunday in the summer. Plus the surrounding buildings are covered in awesome street art.

2)    Live band karaoke at Arlene’s Grocery. If you happen to be in New York for a Monday night, head to Arlene’s Grocery where PBR is $1 a can and they have an awesome karaoke. Regular karaoke, but the backing music is replaced by a live rock band playing along as you sing. And if you still feel strong, you can go watch Francois K at Cielo.

3)    Central Park. Go rent a bike from here and cycle the 7 miles around the whole thing. Its an amazing park, stuck in the middle of the urban jungle, and there is no better way to see all its glory than in the seat of a cruiser.
