Matisyahu

Sunday night completed the trio of live events for the weekend, when I got to see Matisyahu at The Bell House in Gowanus. Rather than watch my $10 oscar bet dwindle away on my rash Mickey Rourke gamble, I went out with friends to see a guy who’s live act has been recommended to me over and over.

I have been a huge dub fan for a long time and I was interested in what Matisyahu would bring to the genre. His vocal range is fierce and he really embodies the soulful vibe that dub music represents. But most of all he has this awesome stage presence. Totally laid back, but furiously intense all at the same time. It brings with it an energy that make all of his performances worth catching.

I was sold on the Bell House too - it really is in the arse end of nowhere in Gowanus, but just a great lounge bar with a cracking venue nailed onto the back of it. Like many other slightly out of the way venues, it brings in a discerning crowd. I totally fell in love with the owner, and will be heading back there on March 29 for The Broken West, if not before.
