Value

The total amount of all bonuses awarded by banks in the City of London will be $7B this year.
That’s exactly the same amount as the value of shares Mark Zuckerburg owns in Facebook.
Makes you think.
a useful place to jot down thoughts and remind myself what i spend time thinking about and doing, especially when i forget at the end of each month.

Interesting to see Moleskine take a new approach to meeting the challenge of a range of new electronic note taking capabilities. When Palm released the first round of Pilots 10 years ago, Moleskine chose to ignore the threat and instead emphasize the practicality and convenience of a pencil and a notebook.
But the advent of the iPhone and the iPad has caused a dramatic shift in stance, as demonstrated by the latest products they released earlier this week, and pictured above. Their range of protective cases for the latest Apple portables include a notebook for enabling simultaneous surfing/texting/apping and scribbling. They are well designed, and I am sure will sell strongly, but I am still not how well used this new design will be.
I’m not sure if its the inconvenience of the keyboard, or the latent faux pas of tapping away in a meeting, but I am still not seeing iPads become the note taking device of choice in most of the meetings I sit through. The first items that almost everyone I know reach for are a pen, something to write on.

Just an overwhelming number of great reasons to post this project this morning. In no particular order, here is why you should go spend some time with the new Arcade Fire music video.
1. Its a great track. Their music just seems to get better and better
2. Chris Milk, who made this, wrote and directed the movie
3. It is the first large-scale project that I have seen built in HTML5 and it looks incredible
4. It is about 200 layers deep - its interactive, it features your home, you can build and analogize postcards - go get lost for an hour
All in all this is just an exceptional piece of creative work. Google are rapidly going up in my estimation - I thought creativity and cutting edge were both beyond them.

Fascinating story coming out of Chile over the last few days. 33 miners are trapped deep underground, but have managed to reach a 50 sq meter safety chamber where they can receive water, food and emergency supplies from the surface, but they cannot escape.
What is extraordinary here is that it is going to take 4 months to rescue them. That is the time it will take to drill a relief shaft and get across to them. All the discussion and debate has not been about how the rescue will take place, but rather on how to protect the mental state of the 33 men trapped in such a small space together. The Chilean government have called on NASA for advice, describing the conditions as being ‘much like those in a space ship’.
I’m not sure I can recall an incident quite like this happening before. Its going to be a remarkable experiment in human psychology and I am really interested to watch the different strategies the rescue team employ to maintain morale.
The most debate has surrounded what to tell the miners about when they are going to be rescued. Tell them the truth and you risk them becoming disillusioned. Lie and you will rapidly lose their trust. Its going to be an amazing journey to follow.

“GDP since Jesus: China’s economy has returned to being one of the world’s two biggest, a position it has held for most of recorded history”
The new Economist tumblr is just great.
